According to a study, 1 in 10 people receiving special education are Intellectually Disabled. Many schools don't have the resources necessary to provide education for Intellectually Disabled kids. This is usually due to the lack of experience by the school for people with Intellectual Disabilities. They don't have the knowledge of how to teach Intellectually Disabled people. This restricts Intellectually Disabled people to pursue their goals in life. This forces them to stay in high school. They can't find the right education for them and often can't find high level jobs. Lee's daughter had down syndrome and wished to attend a college like her regular brother attended. Lee couldn't find a program in the Washington Metro area, so she helped to create a program at George Mason University. Her daughter attended that program for four years and thee program is now recognized as one of the best programs in the country. There are other programs.
1. ICE (Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment)
Molly Boyle, the program coordinator likes to say that students enrolled in her program hardly realize that they are enrolled in anything more than community college classes.
2. IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)
This is a law ensuring services to children with disabilities throughout the nation.
