Bullying at School
There are many causes to bullying at school. A study shows that 60 percent of Intellectually Disabled kids are bullied compared to 25 percent of regular students that are bullied. This is due to the fact that many children with out an form of Intellectual Disabilities have thought those who are disabled to be beneath themselves. Many children often think that they are far more superior to those who are Intellectually Disabled and often torment them about it. They may be under the influence of parents, or may be under the influence of their environment. This has a very negative effect on those who are being bullied. Intellectually Disabled kids may resist going to school to get the proper education they need. Their workplace may be unsafe for them. When this happens, parents need to seek help immediately to make sure that such an experience never happens. These are a few steps to help Intellectually Disabled kids stand up to bullying.
1. Recognize what is going on. If the child is different, he will get bullied.
2. Build an adult support system. Meet with the child's caretakers to help build safe environment.
3. Put the child in groups where his fields are strong. This will give time for the child to meet with various peers who will stand up for him if he or she gets bullied.
4. Help the child realize that he or she has talents too. This will help build confidence.
5. Teach avoidance skills.
6. Try to understand the child's point of view. Care and comfort the child when he is talking about his or her feelings
